Hi Filippa,
The basic answer to your question is to ask Spirit, or your helping spirits whether they support you making a bone rattle. And you can ask the animal what kinds of powers it may bring to your work. Deer bones bring a different energy than pork or lamb. There really aren’t any rules about making the rattle besides being respectful to the spirit of the animal and asking its permission to use it in a rattle. I don’t know if you’ve tried using the internet to purchase deer bones, but there are many stores that have them. The good thing with that is that they will arrive cleaned and ready to work with. (Patti and I harvest our bones from a local “deer graveyard” so we need to clean them and prepare them.)
