Dr. Farmer… much Gratitude for your writing.
Being Dyslexic/ADHD your article further explains the neuroscience of brain functioning, anomalies associated with such “disorders”, influential environmental factors, noting that rhythmic patterns can emanate healing processes that the body instinctually or otherwise resonate with.
Personally, having been born subsequent to my mother’s previous miscarriage I can now better understand her undoubted stress during my time in the womb and the consequential effects.
Thank you for citing those studies you referenced specifically, ([1] .” (Serrallach, B. et al. Neural biomarkers for dyslexia, ADHD, and ADD in the auditory cortex of children. Front. Neurosci. 10, 324 (2016). Having read this study, it clearly explains how the Auditory Cortex is impacted for those diagnosed with Dyslexia/ADHD.
For myself (67yo) learning to play the piano (bucket list) I now better understand as to why my “innate” ability to discern rhythmic patterns are challenged and undoubtedly will be a “learned” ability having a steep learning curve.
Drumming, is a frequent activity for me, not for only Journeying but rhythmic aptitude training.
A’ho!
Great article! I love the introductory paragraph and it the picture it paints about our primal connection to rhythm. I also appreciate the Mickey Hart quote! I have been playing Mickey Hart radio on Spotify for weeks now.
Regarding the stress and pregnancy discussion, I want to make sure readers, especially expectant mothers, understand that the normal stress of pregnancy is unlikely to cause troubling outcomes. The research seems to show that it is high levels of chronic stress (deaths, catastrophic events, abuse, homelessness, preexisting mental health disorders, etc) that may cause issues. I mention that because when I was pregnant with my first child I felt guilt about my stress levels which caused more stress! Luckily I was also hosting a lot of ceremonies and was drumming up a storm which relieved the stress. My husband and I used to even drum over each other to help release some of the physical and emotional tensions that built up.
Thank you so much for this article. VERY well written.
Beautiful article. Thank you Dr. Farmer for writing with deep intentional and deliberate care. Warmly, Dr. Badruddoja
